About George White
Hi, my name is George White! I've been following Jesus Christ as His disciple since 1977. I've been teaching and helping others follow him almost as long. I think of myself as a modern day “tent-making” missionary. I have a calling, to follow God and to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have worked various jobs and careers to support myself and my family while pursuing my calling. I'm a member of a local church. I'm not an official representative of any group or organization, but I've benefited tremendously from the teaching and influence of Campus Crusade for Christ, The Navigators, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, The Evangelical Free Church of America, a number of independent mega churches and 100s of authors and speakers. I'm not a paid pastor, preacher, priest, minister, missionary or spiritual worker. I'm a guy with a job. Just like most of you. Over the course of my life I've been paid as a (in alphabetical order): college professor, cook, corn de-tassler, factory worker, farm hand, handy man, high school teacher, janitor, missionary, painting contractor, substitute preacher, substitute teacher, and I've had more than one job that required me to ask, “Do you want fries with that?” I have a bachelors degree in teaching and a Masters of Business Administration. Since 1993, I've been teaching business classes at a local college. I'm married to my high school sweetheart and we have an adult daughter. I'm a middle-aged man of average height, 15 pounds over weight and balding. I'm part of a local Christian accountability group call the Mighty Men Tribe. In 2008, some of us decided to take our disciplemaking experience on-line and see what God might do. Paul told Timothy, “And the things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2, NIV). I take this command seriously. I've been “entrusting to reliable” men (and sometimes women) the things I have learned for over 30 years. God has given me the heart and the knowledge to help other people pursue and find Him. And now He has given me a plan in my mind's eye to expand my reach across the globe using the Internet. The focus of www.Practical-Discipleship.com is to provide as much free advice and practical suggestions as we can to help as many people as we can so they can give as much of themselves as they can to pursuing and following as much of Jesus Christ as they know. Discipleship focuses minds and energy on the pursuit of Jesus Christ as a teacher and friend. It's a choice of the will that leads to action. Not an emotional experience that leads to a feeling. I started this web site because: 1. I believe God wanted me to. 2. I believe there are a lot of frustrated followers of the Lord Jesus Christ in the world. 3. I believe discipleship is pretty simple, AND pretty hard. 4. I believe people need to be taught, helped, encouraged, and admonished to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.
I want to help people in the work of discipleship. I have been helping people make disciples of Jesus Christ since 1979. I work mostly with college aged men and women. Some of the people I've helped are in their 40s and 50s now and thriving. I want to help you develop confidence and competence in relating to God and relating to people. Few of the ideas you will read about here originated with me. I am trying to be faithful to take the things I have heard in the presence of many witnesses and pass them on to faithful men and women who will be able to teach others also (2 Timothy 2:2). What help do you need to take the next steps in your discipleship journey?
