Unique Selling Proposition

I teach business classes at the local college. We recommend a business have a unique selling proposition (USP). A USP sets their organization apart from every other organization in their industry.

I'm selling practical discipleship. Not religion. Not Christianity. Not church attendance. But practical, actionable, doable steps to following the Lord Jesus Christ. And the USP for www.Practical-Discipleship.com is:

“Been there, done that, so can you, we can help”

I arrived at this slogan as a combination of:

“Been there,” ==> I was once a young, eager and incredibly ignorant follower of Jesus Christ. We all have to start at the beginning. No one gets to start in the middle or jump to the end.

Mountain Dew had a slogan in the 1990s, “Done that, Did That, Been There, Tried That.” (I had a six-pack-a-day Diet Mountain Dew habit 20 years ago. I have more than one t-shirt with that slogan on it.) :-)

Someone has always been where you are before you were. Someone has always done what you need to do before you had to do it. Why not learn from them?

“Done that,” ==> I made my share of mistakes as I sought God and worked at living out His will for my life. He has been faithful to accomplish His purposes through me.

The suggestions you find on this website have been successfully used, usually by me. Sometimes guest writers will share their experiences. These techniques have been forged in the battles of daily living. They are not theoretical, they actually work!

I've had a dozen different mentors in my life. I've learned a lot by watching what they did.

“So can you,” ==> In three decades of disciplemaking, I have never met anyone who could not be all God wanted them to be as long as they were completely submissive to God's plan for their life.

In the movie “The Edge,” the main characters are sitting around the campfire contemplating whether or not they can kill the grizzly bear stalking them through the woods. They have a pocket knife. Doubt is expressed as to the probability they can kill the bear. Calmly and confidently Anthony Hopkin's character, Charles Morse, says “what one man can do, another can do.” Men had killed grizzly bears in the past, therefore, it could be done.

In John 14:12 while comforting His disciples, Jesus Christ said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things that these, because I am going to the Father.” (emphasis mine). Jesus says not only will we do what He did, but we will do greater things than those Jesus did.

You can do it! I can do it! We can do it!

“We can help,” ==> My friends and I in the Mighty Man Tribe accountability group have been mentoring men (and occasionally women, but usually we leave that up to our wives) for most of our adult lives. Between us, we have 100s of years of experience.

In the late 2000's, Home Depot's slogan was “You can do it, we can help.”

An older, wiser mentor once told me, “We take the younger generation of disciples, train them up, send them out, and then choke on their dust as they surpass us in making disciples of all nations.”

And thus was born:

“Been there, done that, so can you, we can help.”

A mentor can help you grow and mature about 40 percent faster than you can on your own. Mentors help you see consequences of decisions you're making and offer suggestions for making the best use of your time, talents and resources. A good mentor should offer wisdom from the experience of practicing what they are preaching.

We want to help you.

What kind of questions do you have about being and making disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ?
