Name in English Translation: The God Who Sees Me
Hebrew name: ROI-- [roee]
What it means
Hagar was pregnant with Abraham's son, Ishmael. Because of this, Sarai, Abraham's wife was upset and mistreated Hagar. Hagar had enough and fled out into the desert. Out in the desert, near a water spring, the angel of the LORD found Hagar.
Hagar told the angel of the LORD she was running away from Sarai. The angel of the LORD told her to return to Sarai and Abraham and submit to them. Then Hagar was given a promise that her descendants, through the son she carried, Ishmael, would be too numerous to count.
Encouraged by her personal encounter with God, “She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: 'You are the God who sees me,' for she said, 'I have now seen the One who sees me.'” (Genesis 16:13)
This name only appears one time in the Bible, Genesis 16:13. Hagar was impressed by the fact that the God of the Universe was personally interested in her. As a slave, she may have wondered if she was insignificant in the scheme of things. God showed her that she was important to Him.
The encounter and Hagar's retelling of it must have impressed the people in the area because the renamed the well where the encounter took place to commemorate the event. “That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.” (Genesis 16:14) Beer Lahai Roi means “the well dedicated to the Living One who sees me.”
While the name El-Roi only appeared one time, it had a profound impact on the people of the day. In fact, it has a profound impact on us today. Those in the world who practice Islam, consider themselves descendants of Ishmael.
The name El-Roi should serve as a reminder to us that God is always watching us. He is intimately and personally interested in each and everyone of us on the earth. All six billion plus, of us!
